2026年2月に亡くなった Neil Sedaka を追悼するため、日本でも馴染みのあるこの曲の意訳をしてみた！

Doo-Wop 調の R&B 曲。
ジャンル的に、ブラック・ミュージックがルーツなので、暗い現状を笑いとばす力強さを伝える感じで意訳しました。
原詩の冒頭部を、どう扱うか相当悩みました。

は、単に汽車が来るとか、汽車に乗って行くという風景ではなく、かつて黒人差別が強かった時代、職業の選択などなく、明日はどうなるかわからない生活があった。だから、自分たちで選び、自ら進んで行くのではなく、汽車で運ばれて行くんだと感じました。
ただ、それをそのまま日本語で訳そうとすと、直訳では説明が不足してしまい、補足しようとすると、説明的すぎてしまった。
なので、いっそのこと別の解釈にしてしまえと、諸々のしがらみを「重い荷物」にしてしまいました。
そうすることで、意訳は一気に進んだんですが、今度は原詩の語感、乗せた意味からかけ離れてしまうということが発生しました。

これは、「悲しみを運ぶ汽車から降りよう」って感じの文ですが、ぼくはこれを「悲しみに捕らわれる必要なんてないんだ」と、原曲、原詩いずれのニュアンスともかけ離れて意訳をしたり、結構、迷走しました。
文体として、です。ます。で意訳していたけど、そうすると、仲間同士で励まし合う感じが無かったので、語尾にも気を使いました。
結果、ストーリーとしては、しがらみに雁字搦めになっている友人をみんなで励ます感じにしました。だから、

この曲では、「No」がめっちゃあります。
同じ言葉を繰り返すことにはこだわりのあるぼくですが、今回は、数にこだわらず、意訳文の中でニュアンスを伝えようと頑張りました。
